Nostalgia

July 25, 2008

Family has always been extremely important to me. I’m especially sentimental about generations that have already passed away.

My great-grandfather died in 1994. My husband and I had just finished our junior year of high school and had been dating for several months. He made the trip to northeast Texas with my family for the funeral.

The preacher came by the house to talk with Granny about the funeral. He asked her what she wanted him to say. Granny couldn’t think of anything, so she looked at me and my mom. I said it might be nice to tell the story of how she and Daddy Joe had met. Granny said she didn’t remember meeting him. He had lived down the road when they were kids and they walked to school together. She’d known him her entire life. Then I asked her when they fell in love. Granny just sat there, lost in thought for awhile. Finally she said, “I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love him.” They had been married 69 years.

Granny joined Daddy Joe in Heaven on my first wedding anniversary: August 21, 2000.

wow, that’s probably the most touching blog I have read in quite a while. What a great memory to carry with you through life.

Favorite post 3. My grandparents are my heroes. They have been married 65 years and are both in good health for their age. They will both be turning 90 next year, and neither of them require a cane, walker, or go-cart. They have been through some tough times- my grandpa has survived cancer multiple times, and my grandma had a nasty stroke- and they were at each other’s sides the whole time. Your granny’s words remind me of my grandparents.
