Craft time! (or not)
Not unlike Jessica, I loathe crafts.
I remember being given a book of “101 Fun Crafts For You and Your Child” by some well-meaning woman for my birthday one year. I was probably, like, age 6 (I’m guessing and it’s irrelevant). I recall looking through the book in an attempt to be inspired, time and time again, thinking, “Who actually does this crap?” The book eventually made its way to Goodwill, having never been used by yours truly.
To me, crafts are a total waste of time. You collect garbage (ex: used toilet paper rolls and egg cartons), create some ridiculous sculpture with it, are then clueless as to where to store said sculpture, and feel incredibly guilty when it eventually ends up in the trash. In my humble opinion, a more creative outlet would include one or more of the following: write a story, paint on canvas, play an instrument, learn to cook, start a blog, etc. But crafts? No, thanks.
So, it should come as no surprise that I don’t make crafts with my children. There. I said it. After feeling guilty for years, I’m now set free. Do they feel cheated? I doubt it. That get plenty of crap craft time at school.
Who ever defined craft time as quality time, anyway? I’m pretty sure my kids would classify quality time this way instead:
Taylor – shopping (with me buying, of course)
Nathan – swimming
Noah – playing with the water hose
Jonah – slurping on deez boobs
So, yeah. Kudos to parents who do crafts, but it’s not for me.
p.s. – Happy birthday, Wendy!
I don’t like crafts either. I’ve still got kits given to me by friends and neighbors. I can’t stand to do them and most of the time the kits won’t stay glued on or whatever they’re supposed to do/be. I have a general rule—whatever the kids make, I keep it on display for couple of weeks and then into the trash they go. Sure there will always be something here and there that I’ll keep but I can’t stand clutter. I throw everything away, Tim on the other hand is a hoarder…
you are so funny, and most everything you ever say is like exactly what i’m thinking or feeling!
You never go shopping with me
Now, Taylor, that isn’t true. We haven’t been LATELY, but we’ve been at least 3 times since May.
Lori, I am so glad I’m not the only one who feels this way! I HATE doing crafts (except my annual 2 month obsession with scrapbooking). I, too, am guilty of keeping them for a week or so then tossing them in the trash. I do normally ask if it’s ok with the child who created it before it goes in said trash. I have however thought of a clever way of capturing those cute and noteworthy crafts by taking a snapshot of them (idea courtesy of Snapfish on Oprah). Eventually they’ll end up in a scrapbook by themselves.
Was I there?????
Yes, Taylor! How do you forget these things?
word.
