Halloween Recap

November 1, 2009

It’s interesting. As I get older, I like candy less and less. I’m not even tempted by the huge basket of Halloween treats on my kitchen counter right now. Things would certainly change if Butterfingers were switched to Godiva truffles, but until then, I can resist temptation. Anyway, on to the recap…

Due to procrastination, no pumpkins could be found yesterday. So Andy carved a watermelon. We actually liked it a lot and I think we’ve started an annual tradition. The only downside was that Amy gave me an awesome pumpkin bread recipe, which I was unable to make due to missing the key ingredient. Recipe forthcoming. (I kid, I kid! Amy told me that if I share it, we’re through. Sorry for getting your hopes up. Actually, Eric is probably relieved. He hates when I post recipes.)

(Incidentally, how do you get stains off Corian? I’ve tried scrubbing the sink countless times with Comet over the past year and yet it still looks a bit dirty/stained. What the heck?)

Nathan taped some of his decorations to the front door. So festive.

Andy’s parents (Jerry and Nancy), sister (Sarah), and brother (Matt) came over for lunch.

Nancy brought a delicious home-cooked meal and a cake for Matt’s belated birthday celebration. Score!

Isn’t my son handsome? I just thought I’d throw it out there.

His brother is pretty adorable, too:

So is the other one. The shirt says it all: “I’m so cute it’s scary!”

Too bad Jonah spit up so many times that this outfit didn’t make it until trick-or-treating time. Speaking of spitting up…

I downloaded the Hurl app on my iPhone (’twas free) because I knew it would impress Nathan. The barfing noises are extremely realistic and I almost puke every time I hear them. Nathan played each spewing sound for our posse.

Many laughs and I almost wet my pants. I like to caption the following photo, “Come on, bladder, don’t fail me now!”

Taylor and her BFF Sydney posed with their usual “facebook face” more than once. Not sure why they didn’t enter my contest. They could have owned it.

Nathan and I also did our best “facebook face” expressions. How did we do?

Yes, my hair is getting quite long. My goal is to grow it long enough that shirts are no longer necessary to cover Jonah’s buffet. Just kidding! Geez.

Here is 75% of my offspring:

Yes, Noah was a chicken. So freaking precious. I got his costume at Old Navy on November 1st last year. $5, thank you very much. Worth every penny. That’s when to get your costume, by the way: November 1st.

Of course, he’s holding a Hot Wheels truck. He ALWAYS has at least one in his hand. And by always, I mean even while eating, bathing, and sleeping.

Nathan was an iPhone because, in his words, “If I can’t have one, I’ll be one!”

Yes, it was slightly ghetto-fab, but I couldn’t find one on clearance for $5, so I got as crafty as I possibly could. I wouldn’t say it was an epic fail. He liked it and originality counts for something, right?

Taylor and Sydney were 80′s Pop Diva Twins or something like that. I don’t know.

Jonah, not quite 5 months old, did not have a costume, unless you count the pajamas from our friend Lisa. But he did sport Sarah’s Jane Jetson wig for like five seconds.

Sarah and Jonah had some good cuddle time. My arms got a break and I was able to swoon over his cuteness from across the room. Sweetness!

The sunset last night was really nice (you know I’m a sucker for a good sunset). This was the view while standing in my front yard:

The pink and purple colors did slightly remind me of Misty the magical unicorn, but it was nice nonetheless.

I have a confession to make. I met Taylor’s boyfriend for the first time last night (her second boyfriend of the school year, I might add). I wouldn’t exactly say it went well. I may have accidentally threatened his life during our introductions. But I went trick-or-treating with the middle school group (as to prevent touching/kissing) and I think I smoothed things over by letting him hear all the Hurl app sounds. Maybe? Maybe not. It’s hard being the parent of a middle school girl, especially when I’m well aware she’s hot. {sigh}

p.s. – Happy birthday, Chris!

I’ve had several of my sisters mention a boy they liked or some such thing and I simply ask them “Oh really? Well, are you ready to get married? no? Ok, well then you have no business being interested in that boy right now.” Because really…what’s the point of dating if it can’t lead to marriage?

I’m pretty sure Ella will hear similar propaganda.

Oh, I’m with you, Leah! I tried that conversation and it hasn’t really gotten me anywhere. But I can still prevent “alone” time!
