Peace Out

November 6, 2009

I’m a fan of peace. I’m a fan of peaceful situations. I think it would be great if everyone [on earth] could just get along. Sadly, this is never going to happen. Not to sound like a pessimist, but if you read Revelation, you know world peace is impossible. (Of course, that’s for another post.)

My annoyance is not with peace… it’s with the peace symbol.

You know how you can hear a new song on the radio and you dig it, but after it’s played twice per hour, every hour, for a month straight, hearing the first three seconds could make you want to jump off the nearest cliff without a parachute? It’s like when I worked retail in high school and I had the opportunity to hear Sheryl Crow’s “All I Wanna Do” 25+ times per day (and I only worked 5-hour shifts). Even now, fifteen years later, hearing that song makes me puke a little in my mouth and contemplate setting my hair on fire. That’s kind of how I feel about the peace symbol.

OVER-USED. Seriously. It’s like clothing and home-decor designers have lost every ounce of creativity they ever had. Can’t pick a new graphic for the fall line? Slap a peace sign on it! Not sure what print to use for next season’s bedding collection? Slap a peace sign on it!

I expect this kind of monotony from Wet Seal and Claire’s Boutique, but has anyone seen the early holiday 2009 PB teen or December 2009 Pottery Barn catalogs? Even they have embraced the peace symbol, including on their gift wrap! I expected more from Pottery Barn. I really did. I’m borderline insulted.

Again, I’m a fan of peace. Just not the peace symbol. SO OVER IT.

p.s. – Happy birthday, Jennifer!

that’s so funny you said that… I just got a Christmas email from PB, and the cover picture was this glitter-covered peace symbol. The fact that they called it German didn’t make it classy. It’s been overdone… what were they thinking?!

I am sick of seeing everyone and their mom throw up a peace sign for pictures. “I don’t really know what to do with my hands…?”

Crystal, the peace sign goes along with the “facebook face” like peanut butter and jelly. I love making fun of it, thus my most recent contest.
