Texas: Day 3

July 14, 2010

As per their usual, our boys woke us up early on Sunday.

After eating breakfast and getting dressed, they still had time to kill, so they played on the balcony for a bit.

Aren’t my grandparents cute in their church clothes? Man, I don’t even OWN “church” clothes! In fact, I haven’t worn pantyhose (which, incidentally, are of the devil) since I worked at a non-profit organization that required them as part of their dress code in 2004. Ladies, can you imagine? Pantyhose in 100+ degree heat with 100% humidity? Hello, swamp crotch! Moving right along…

I made the executive decision to make all my grandmother’s dreams come true, and we attended the morning service at her small Baptist church.

And by small, I mean that our extended family represented over half of the daily attendance. I reckon we ain’t at Shoreline Church today, kids!

My granddaddy said that “the only time to take pictures in a church is during a wedding or a funeral,” but I did it, anyway. I classified Vacation Documentation as a legitimate reason.

After a lunch that [for me] consisted of two adult portions of leftover BBQ ribs with all the typical side dishes, followed by three desserts, we said goodbye to my uncle Mike, aunt Pam, and cousin Angela as they left for their 3-day road trip back to North Carolina. Ten hours is bad enough. I wasn’t jealous of the additional seven hours their trip required.

My gluttonous lunch-induced coma lasted about an hour. After waking up, Andy and I took Nathan to the neighbor’s ranch to see some animals.

The wildlife rescue people bring orphaned baby deers to the ranch for safe keeping. They are AWESOME! I had no idea baby deers were so soft and sweet. I wanted to keep one, and I don’t even like having pets! Don’t worry, I caught a good whiff of their poop and snapped back into reality. That aside, aren’t they beautiful?!

Next we saw the cows. Nathan had talked about nothing but “touching a cow’s udders” for the past several days, so we tried to accommodate his request.

Unfortunately, the cows weren’t bouty-bout letting us touch them. Cows might look lazy standing in a field munching on some grass, but when they’re scared, those suckers can actually run! I had visions of them trampling us, and decided it wasn’t worth the risk of Nathan caressing an udder.

He was disappointed to say the least, but I convinced him it wasn’t worth dying.

Next we saw the horses.

23 weeks pregnant (me, not the horse)

The two female horses loved us long time. The male horse thought we were trying to steal his women and kept giving us dirty looks.

The ranch was picturesque, indeed. It looked pretty much how I imagined it would.

Our animal adventure was complete, and we headed back to the lake house.

There was just enough time for a little fishing before dinner. By the way, my mom and her husband Harold tend to dress in coordinating outfits “on accident” almost every day.

Dinner was my granddaddy’s incredibly delicious seafood gumbo. God knows I’ve yet to find a restaurant that can match its goodness.

After dinner, Nathan and Noah took turns cuddling with my grandmother. I’m pretty sure she enjoyed it quite a bit.

This is one of my favorite posts of yours, ever. I love the pics, I love your family, I love you, but I am in agreement (hehehe) with your Grandaddy about pics in church, I was shocked to see that! It did make me giggle and realize what a stronghold being raised Southern Baptist had on me.

The animal pics made me want to jump through the screen and pet pet pet and kiss wet deer noses.

Nathan wanting to fondle cow boobs is hilarious… yes it is…

Lori – your pics of the deer are beautiful!!!! I want my own baby deer – don’t think Adam would be up for that, much less the cat and dog…

LOVE EACH and EVERY Day in Texas, these were hilarious! The pics are wonderful, as usual ; ) But the narration is second to none. I NEVER read anyone else’s blog, you’ve set the bar too high and I hate disappointment :D
